Security Check on Nuclear Power Plants Under Construction

June 30, 2011 No Comments

“In May Chinese nuclear authorities finished inspections of nuclear plants that have been in operation. In the near future, a similar check will be performed on nuclear power plants now under construction,” said Qian Zhiming, vice Minister of the Nation Energy Board (NEB), on the Second Global Think Tank Summit Energy security and nuclear sub-forum.

Qian said before the nuclear safety policy is released, the government will not start to approve new nuclear power plant projects. In addition, NEB will also adjust medium- and long-term development plans. The world won’t stop using nuclear power but will use it in a higher safety and technical standard, Qian noted.

“Over the next one to two years, no new nuclear power plants will be approved. These two years will be used as technological improvement period,” said Shen Wenquan, senior engineer of State Nuclear Power Technology Company (SNPTC), “After two years’ period, nuclear power plants will be built according to the safety operation standard of the third generation nuclear power plants. The construction period may be reduced from five years to four years.”
