China’s Nuclear Industry: Better Safe than Sorry

June 27, 2011 No Comments

China is still working on its safety plan for nuclear power. Analysts consider the plan includes contingency arrangements that may not have been taken into account before the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear disaster in March 2011. The nuclear plan should be complete by August of this year, according to an insider in the National Nuclear Safety Administration, and submitted to State Council, China’s Cabinet, for approval. The draft plan is the foundation for nuclear power development in China in the middle and long term., according to Shen Wenquan of the State Nuclear Power Technology Corp.

Twenty-seven nuclear plants that were already under construction when the Japanese incident occurred are still underway.  The 12th Five-year plan envisions China’s nuclear capacity will reach more than 40 million KW by 2015.
