Foreign Companies Invest in Smart Grids

May 2, 2011 No Comments

Many foreign companies want to capitalize on the booming smart grid industry in China by increasing investments and providing technological support and solutions. The government is totally open to foreign investments in the technological sectors of the smart grid industry.

“If a company has new, advanced technology that can be applied in the fast-growing smart grid industry, they will get an approval from the government quickly,” said Jiang Kejun, director of Energy Research Institution of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

Alstom Grid opened its China Technology Center in Shanghai last month to develop solutions for the strong smart grid. The center will also focus on the research and development and testing of the transmission and energy management.

Meanwhile, Siemens Ltd will take part in the bid for the State Grid’s charging piles project this year. The company established business units in Beijing and Shanghai last October for the research and development of the smart grid, however the competition is fierce.

In addition, other foreign companies are providing software for the smart grid system, such as the utility center developed by Hewlett-Packard Co.
