According to Liang Zhipeng, the chief of New Energy and Renewable Energy Department of China National Energy Bureau, 100 new energy model cities will be authorized during the twelfth five-year plan.

As a new follower of the world’s PV industry, in 2010 China’s capacity of PV cell products was 8,000 MW, which was almost half of the capacity of the world. Such output made China no. 1 in PV products.

Although China has been a large PV producer, the situation of the domestic market remains to be improved. Mr. Liang suggested that demonstration districts of micro grids will be built up during the twelfth “five-year plan” in areas that are predominant in solar and wind resources. Meanwhile, 100 new energy model cities will be authorized. The central government wishes to encourage companies and manufacturers to lower the cost of PV power by updating the current technology. As estimated, the cost could decrease in next three to five years.
