China’s central government has confirmed its commitment to the development of alternative sources of energy through the publication of its Annual Report on “Actions to Address Climate Change”.

The Report discusses its progress in various energy-related industries, citing such figures as the rapid rise of its wind power industry, which saw year-on-year growth rates of 100% since 2006; and that it has closed more than one thousand small, presumably dangerous – if not simply inefficient – coal mines.

The report does cite there is a continuing disconnect between the ambitions of local governments that place economic development through dirty industries ahead of environmental concerns.

The disconnect, though, has only been around for about two thousand years.
